One of the semi-hidden treasures of Portland is the Venerable Showers of Beauty, a Javanese gamelan brought to Lewis & Clark College in 1980. The gamelan, the first in Oregon and one of the first fifteen in the United States, is nearly 100 years old and include special ceremonial instruments.

The Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan is Oregon’s first gamelan and Lewis & Clark’s renowned gamelan orchestra for over 25 years, consisting of students, graduates and community members. The Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan has performed around Oregon and Washington, as well as at festivals and art exhibitions. The term “gamelan” refers to a group of Javanese instruments, a bronze orchestra consisting of nearly 40 mostly percussive instruments with bronze keys and gongs. Gamelan has a history that dates back over a thousand years.
